Why Proper Lawn Fertilization Matters for Long-Term Turf Health
Healthy lawns don’t happen by accident. Proper fertilization plays a critical role in turf development by supplying essential nutrients that grass cannot always absorb naturally from the soil. Without consistent, balanced fertilization, lawns often become thin, discolored, and more vulnerable to weeds, disease, and environmental stress.
In this region, soil composition, weather patterns, and seasonal temperature swings place additional demands on turfgrass. Heat stress, compacted soil, and inconsistent rainfall can quickly deplete nutrients, making routine fertilization essential for maintaining strong root systems and steady growth. A well-fed lawn is better equipped to withstand drought conditions and recover from seasonal wear.
Professional lawn fertilization goes beyond simply applying fertilizer. It requires understanding nutrient timing, grass growth cycles, and how soil conditions affect absorption. When fertilization is applied correctly, it encourages thicker turf, deeper roots, and improved color while reducing the opportunity for weeds to establish.
That’s why an intentional, science-based fertilization approach is key to building healthier lawns that perform better year after year.
Benefits of a Professionally Fertilized Lawn
-
1. Weed-Resistant Turf
A properly fertilized lawn grows thicker and denser, naturally limiting space for weeds to establish. Strong turf competes more effectively for nutrients, sunlight, and moisture, reducing weed pressure over time.
-
2. Improved Drought Tolerance
Fertilization supports deeper root development, allowing grass to access moisture below the surface. This improves drought resistance and helps lawns recover more quickly during extended dry periods.
-
3. Richer, Darker Green Color
Balanced nutrient applications promote consistent growth and improved chlorophyll production, resulting in a healthier, more vibrant green appearance throughout the growing season.
-
4. Stronger Root Development
Healthy roots are the foundation of long-lasting turf. Proper fertilization encourages deeper, more resilient root systems that support better nutrient uptake and long-term lawn stability.
-
5. Restores Essential Soil Nutrients
Over time, lawns deplete nutrients naturally through growth and environmental exposure. Fertilization replenishes key nutrients needed to maintain consistent turf performance and vitality.
-
6. Improves Overall Soil Quality
Fertilization contributes to improved soil structure and nutrient balance, creating an environment that supports stronger grass growth and long-term lawn health.
-
7. Helps Protect Against Disease and Fungus
Well-nourished lawns are better equipped to resist stress-related diseases and fungal issues. Balanced fertilization strengthens turf, reducing susceptibility to common lawn problems.
How Our Seasonal Lawn Fertilization Program Works
Our lawn fertilization program is built around seasonal turf needs and long-term soil health. Rather than relying on one-time applications, we follow a structured schedule throughout the year to deliver nutrients when grass can absorb them most effectively. This approach supports steady growth, stronger roots, and healthier turf across changing weather conditions.
Each application is carefully timed to align with growth cycles, helping lawns recover from stress, maintain color, and build resilience over time.
-
Round 1: Winter Pre-Emergent Application (liquid)
This early application targets overwintering grassy and broadleaf weeds before they emerge in spring. Applying pre-emergent protection during this window helps reduce early-season weed pressure while preparing turf for the upcoming growing cycle.
Estimated Application Timing: Jan 15 – Feb 28
-
Round 2: Spring Pre-Emergent Application (liquid)
This round focuses on preventing warm-season grassy weeds before germination begins. By creating a protective barrier in the soil, this application helps limit invasive weeds such as crabgrass and other common spring and summer species.
Estimated Application Timing: March 1 – April 15
-
Round 3: Fertilization (slow release high nitrogen)
As turf emerges from winter dormancy, this fertilization round supports steady growth and early development. Slow-release nutrients help promote improved color, density, and root strength without excessive top growth.
Estimated Application Timing: April 15 – May 31
-
Round 4: Fertilization (slow release high nitrogen)
This application supports continued growth and helps maintain consistent color as temperatures rise. Balanced nutrition at this stage encourages turf density and resilience heading into summer conditions.
Estimated Application Timing: June 1 – July 15
-
Round 5: Fertilization (slow release high nitrogen)
Late-summer feeding helps turf manage environmental stress from heat and limited rainfall. This round focuses on sustaining lawn health and stability during one of the most challenging parts of the growing season.
Estimated Application Timing: July 15 – Aug 31
-
Round 6: Micro Surge Nutrient (liquid)
This application replenishes essential micronutrients that may be depleted during prolonged summer heat. Supporting nutrient balance at this stage helps improve recovery and prepares turf for fall growth.
Estimated Application Timing: July 15 – Aug 31
-
Round 7: Fall Pre-Emergent Application (liquid)
Fall pre-emergent treatments help prevent cool-season weeds from establishing as temperatures decline. This application supports cleaner turf heading into winter while protecting against early weed growth.
Estimated Application Timing: Sept 1 – Oct 31
-
Round 8: Winterizer Treatment & Liquid Aeration
This final application helps strengthen roots and improve nutrient storage for winter survival. Liquid aeration supports soil structure, encouraging healthier root development and improved spring green-up.
Estimated Application Timing: Nov 1 – Dec 15

If you want to get the most of each treatment we apply to your lawn, there are some recommendations you can follow below as well as what to expect each time we service you!
A proper mowing schedule is essential to your lawn’s health and vitality. Mowing too short will damage your grass root system, thin your lawn, decrease drought and disease resistance, and increase your weed population. It can also cause discoloration. During the Summer months mowing height for Bermuda Lawns should be cut at 2–3 inches, Saint Augustine should be cut at 3-4 inches and Zoysia should be cut at 2-3 inches. Mowing 1x per week is ideal in the Summer, every other week in the Spring and when Winter hits and grass growth stops a final mow for the season is common until Spring comes back around. Try not to cut off more than 1/3 of the grass blade per mow. Keep your cutting blade sharp, and do not bag your clippings, as they return nutrients to the soil as they decompose. We do recommend scalping your lawn (BERMUDA ONLY) 1x a year after the Winter ends and before Spring begins. This process does require you to bag the clippings. A reminder will go out when this time comes. Mowing Recommendation Newsletters are sent out via email, once every quarter and/or season (Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter).
Your lawn needs at least 1-2 inches of water per week, year-round (and winter does count). The absolute best time to water your lawn is the early morning, before 6AM. Cooler temperatures and calm breezes help keep evaporation to a minimum. And watering in the morning will keep your turf cooler during the hottest parts of the day, summer months for example, which means less stress on the grass. During Spring (March - April) you should set your sprinkler system to run 2 days per week, in the absence of rainfall, 8-10 minutes per zone. In the hot summer months (May-Aug) you should set your sprinkler system to run 3 days per week, in the absence of rainfall, 12-15 minutes per zone. During the Fall (Sept - Oct) you should water 1-2 times per week, in the absence of rainfall, 7 to 10 minutes per zone. In the Winter your lawn still needs roughly 1 inch of water a week, so unless temps dip below freezing (which would require a system shut off), you should be watering 1 time a week, 3-5 minutes per zone. NOTE: So long as we are above freezing temps and an application has been completed, please turn on your system to water in the product within 24-48 hrs. We understand freezing temps are a concern when it comes to pipes bursting. But when we are above freezing, watering your property accordingly should not be a problem for any homeowner. You can do this at the warmest point of the day after your treatment. If we come later in the day, you can water the next afternoon if you prefer. Always stay up to date on your city’s regulations and/or restrictions as they may differ from county to county. Keep an eye on weather as well because if rain is in the forecast, you can save money by not running your sprinkler system on a particular day. Watering Recommendation Newsletters are sent out via email, once every quarter and/or season (Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter).
When is the best time to water - Morning or Evening? *Watering in the morning prepares the turf for the day, but more importantly, helps the lawn retain water. If you water in the afternoon, especially during summer, the heat and sun are at their peak and the water will evaporate instead of absorbing into the soil and roots. Morning watering is preferable to evening watering as the turf has time to dry before the sun goes down. At night, water tends to rest in the soil, around the roots, and on the foliage, which encourages rot, fungal growth, and insects.*
Summer Watering Tips (pop up heads, rotating heads & drip lines): *Your most effective spray heads are the pop ups that spray water directly out in front of them. See above for estimated times on these during the summer months. Your rotating sprinkler heads (if you have those) NEED to be set at 2x the amount of the pop up spray heads. Then the drip lines, usually in the parkway, NEED to be set to 3x the amount of your pop up spray heads.*
The process of seeing results for our program(s), as with any company, takes time to work. The recommended time frame to see a full turn around on your lawns curb appeal requires 1 full seasonal cycle (7-12 months) of treatments & follow ups in between, if necessary; which are at no cost to you. If you are not watering & mowing correctly, it could take longer to see results, if any. Damage to turf is common if watering and mowing is not done appropriately. We ask that you give us the opportunity to service your property for the full treatment plan in order to see a drastic difference in your turf grass. Timing for each treatment is also important with regards to the results you will experience. America's Best Lawncare carefully applies certain chemicals on your lawn based on the temperature outside. Weather conditions will play a role from year to year to determine if combining applications is necessary. This does not happen often, but it can occur from time to time. We do ask that allow at least 1 hour for product to dry after each treatment, before allowing pets or children back onto the lawn. This is so they do not drag residue indoors. We also ask that you water in every product within 48 hours after application to get the best results & mow before we apply the treatment OR wait 48 hours AFTER your treatment has been completed.
